SHELBY — Mason County Central baseball coach Chris Carr is looking for somebody to complement ace Will Chye at the top of the Spartans’ pitching rotation.

Junior left-hander Owen Shimel looked every bit the part Tuesday in Game 2 of MCC’s sweep over host Shelby in the teams’ West Michigan Conference Rivers Division-opening doubleheader.

Shimel scattered four hits and allowed one earned run over 6 1/3 innings in earning the win in the Spartans’ 3-1 victory in the nightcap. MCC beat Shelby in the first game, 8-4, in which Chye started but was limited to 2 2/3 innings because the Spartans had him on a strict pitch count.

Here are more details and notables from the doubleheader:

  • Brady Anes picked up the Game 1 win in relief for MCC. He allowed two runs (one earned) on one hit with four strikeouts and four walks. Chye allowed two runs on four hits with three strikeouts and one walk in his start.
  • Anes, Peyton Merz, Simon Shimel and Braylin Thurow had two hits apiece for the Spartans in Game 1 with one of Anes’ being a double.
  • Chye was 1-for-3 with two runs scored and three stolen bases in the first game.
  • Shelby’s Lalo Garcia took the loss in Game 1.
  • Shelby’s Eli Kelley had an RBI single in the first game.
  • In Game 2, Chye went 2-for-3 and stole two more bases.
  • Merz picked up the save in the nightcap for MCC, striking out one and allowing no runs on no hits in 2/3 of an inning.
  • Danien Garcia took the Game 2 loss for Shelby. He also had a single and later drove in his team’s lone run.
  • MCC is 2-0 on the season, both overall and in WMC Rivers play. Shelby is 2-2 overall (0-2 WMC Rivers).
