Montague Baseball Dominates, Whitehall Softball Responds in Rivalry Doubleheader Sweep Split

Under a gray April sky, the Whitehall–Montague rivalry unfolded in two very different ways, as Montague baseball rode dominant pitching to a doubleheader sweep (12–2, 9–5) while Whitehall softball answered with an offensive explosion of its own, sweeping 22–1 and 22–6.

BASEBALL

On the diamond, Montague set the tone early and never let it go.

Game one belonged to Eli Petersen, who controlled the matchup from the first pitch. Working with confidence and precision, Petersen struck out ten batters over six innings, allowing just three hits and one earned run. Whitehall struggled to find any rhythm at the plate, constantly kept off balance by Petersen’s command of the strike zone.

While the pitching steadied things, it was the second inning that broke the game open.

Montague erupted for seven runs, turning a tight contest into a runaway. Timely hitting and sustained pressure overwhelmed the Vikings, with key contributions from Fletcher Thommen and Dylan Bailey fueling the rally. From there, the Wildcats continued to build, eventually securing a 12–2 win that ended early.

Game two offered a brief shift in momentum, but only briefly.

Whitehall came out aggressive, capitalizing on Montague defensive miscues to manufacture runs and take an early lead despite limited contact. For a stretch, the Vikings dictated the pace, forcing Montague to respond rather than control.

And respond they did. The turning point came in the fifth inning, when Montague broke through with four runs to reclaim control. Once the Wildcats had the lead, they didn’t let it slip away. Chase Kurtzhal led the offense with three hits, including two doubles, while Thommen and Eli Pendell added multiple hits. Cooper Bradley and Levi Auger each scored twice as Montague built a cushion heading into the final inning.

On the mound, the Wildcats were once again the difference. Cole Herremans struck out eight and battled through defensive challenges, allowing just one earned run. Remi Lohman closed things out, combining with Herremans to complete a no-hitter, an emphatic finish to a day defined by pitching strength.

Whitehall mounted a late push, but Montague held firm to secure the 9–5 victory and complete the sweep.

SOFTBALL

Just a field away, however, the script flipped entirely.

Where baseball was defined by control and command, softball turned into an offensive showcase and it was all Whitehall.

In game one, the Vikings methodically built a lead before unleashing a late-game surge. Holding a 3–1 advantage through two innings, Whitehall broke things open with five runs in the fourth and an overwhelming 13-run fifth inning to end the game early. Jersie Peterson’s two-run home run highlighted the outburst, part of a 19-hit performance that kept constant pressure on Montague.

Whitehall’s aggressive baserunning only added to the chaos, taking advantage of every miscue in the field while drawing 10 walks to keep the lineup moving. Kayden Johnson led the charge with three hits and three runs scored against her former team, while Ryleigh Smith drove in four runs. Beth LeaTrea dominated in the circle, allowing just one hit and striking out nine.

If the first game built toward a breakout, the second skipped straight to it.

Montague struck first, but any early momentum disappeared almost instantly as Whitehall answered with a staggering 17-run first inning. Walks, wild pitches, and timely hitting created a relentless offensive wave that never gave Montague a chance to recover.

Emily Hawkins and Johnson each delivered run-scoring doubles during the inning, while Hawkins finished with three hits in the game. Janie Fagan added another multi-hit performance, and both Aubree Ames and LeaTrea crossed the plate three times. Ames earned the win in the circle as Whitehall closed out the game in just three innings.

In the end, the rivalry delivered a split identity. Montague baseball leaned on discipline, composure, and dominant pitching to control both games from the mound. Whitehall softball, meanwhile, overwhelmed its opponent with speed, aggression, and an explosive offense that never let up.

Same rivalry, same day, two completely different paths to victory.
