Montague’s volleyball team has had its ups and downs this season, but the Wildcats are in a familiar spot: West Michigan Conference title contention.

Montague defeated visiting Mason County Central Tuesday night, 25-4, 25-13, 25-15, to set up a conference showdown against neighboring rival Whitehall next Tuesday in the Wildcats’ gym.

Montague is 10-21 overall and 5-1 in the West Michigan Conference. Whitehall is 19-2 and 6-0, respectively, after a sweep of fellow league-title contender North Muskegon Tuesday.

“We worked on perfecting our game tonight,” Montague coach Shawn Bectel said. “We hit really well and it was a solid effort as a whole.”

Britta Johnson led the charge for Montague with 14 kills, followed closely by Anastasia Trevino with 12. Jaelyn Sunberg tacked on 34 assists.

Alissa Wynn and Morgan Netcott both contributed nine digs apiece to spark the Wildcats.

Next Tuesday’s Montague-Whitehall matchup, set for 6:30 p.m., will wrap up the league’s regular season. The conference championship is determined 50 percent by the regular season and 50 percent by the league tournament, which is scheduled for Oct. 23 at Whitehall.
