Montague wrestler Christopher Aebig outpoints competition for Player of Week honor

Wildcats junior wins hotly contested CatchMark SportsNet West Michigan Conference fan poll for Jan. 16-21, 2023.

Christopher Aebig is accustomed to highly competitive situations. After all, he’s a wrestler.

The Montague junior was in a hotly contested battle for the CatchMark SportsNet West Michigan Conference Player of the Week honor. Like Aebig has done many times this season, he came out on top.

Aebig edged Orchard View senior bowler Konner Maus in the Player of the Week fan poll that recognized six athletes from the conference for their performances spanning Jan. 16-21, 2023.

In a fan poll that erupted, Aebig finished with 9,286 of more than 20,000 total votes. Maus amassed 7,414 votes. See complete voting results for this week’s poll at the bottom of this story.

Aebig had himself a big day in the Greater Muskegon Athletic Association tournament last Saturday at Montague. He pinned each of his first two opponents in less than 90 seconds, then he decisioned Whitehall’s Caden Varela, 15-9, in the finals match en route to capturing the 132-pound championship.

Entering the Randy Jacobs Memorial Duals Saturday at Montague, Aebig carries a 17-3 record with 11 pins.
