North Muskegon V Montague
Montague entered the game at 1-6, hoping to secure a road win in an inter-conference matchup against North Muskegon. Unfortunately for the Wildcats, their search for victory fell short. North Muskegon dominated on their home court, cruising to a commanding 65-22 win. The Norsemen embraced a “no-holds-barred” mentality, outscoring Montague by double digits in three of the four quarters.
Leading the charge for North Muskegon was their likely future all-conference guard, Adam Dugener, who delivered a quietly impressive 25-point performance. Braylen Burrell contributed 19 points, while TJ Byard added 4 points to round out the scoring.
With this victory, the Norsemen remain undefeated at 7-0 and look ahead to a tough matchup against a well-rounded Ludington squad next Tuesday.
Montague, now 1-7, will aim to rebound when they face Newaygo on the road, also on Tuesday.
Whitehall V Oakridge
Oakridge entered this game with limited home-court action so far this season, having split their two home games—beating Manistee and falling to Ludington. Whitehall, meanwhile, has been red-hot during the break, securing a win against a strong Coopersville squad and taking down Grand Rapids Forest Hills Central at the Cornerstone University Holiday Classic (quite a mouthful isn’t it?).
Whitehall came into this matchup determined to keep their undefeated streak alive, while Oakridge aimed to make a statement and spoil that perfect record. After a tightly contested first quarter, where Oakridge trailed by just three points, they stormed into the second quarter with energy. Peyton Ruel delivered a 27-foot three-pointer, helping Oakridge take the lead.
Whitehall found themselves down a couple of possessions at halftime but managed to regain control in the third quarter, securing a five-point lead heading into the final period. In the fourth, Whitehall maintained their momentum and pulled away, ultimately securing a 63-51 victory.
There were several standout performances. Peyton Ruel, Oakridge’s star guard and a likely all-conference selection, reached an impressive 1,000 career points during the game, contributing 25 points overall. However, the night’s top scorer was Whitehall’s Cam Thompson, who edged out Ruel with a game-high 27 points.
Whitehall also saw significant contributions from Brock Morningstar, who tallied 13 points, and Kal Koehler, who added 12 points to round out the double-digit scorers.
With the win, Whitehall improves to 7-2 and will face Reeths-Puffer on Tuesday. Oakridge drops to 5-4 and looks to bounce back against Shelby, also on Tuesday.
