Packers Punch Their Ticket to Regional Final, Highlighting Big Night for Area Soccer

The Fremont Packers are headed back to the Division 3 Regional Final after grinding out a thrilling 1-0 victory over Freeland on Tuesday night at Clare High School.

In a matchup that tested Fremont’s resilience from start to finish, the Falcons controlled much of the play and peppered the Packers’ defense with scoring opportunities. But Fremont’s back line and goalkeeper Hallie Snyder refused to bend. Snyder turned away 18 shots while Grace Evans, Breven Powell, Delaney Petrowski, Tori Ward, Taylor Johnson, and the rest of the defensive unit delivered one of their strongest performances of the season to keep Freeland off the scoreboard.

After a scoreless first half and nearly 68 minutes of defensive soccer, the Packers finally found their breakthrough. Snyder made a save and launched a punt deep into the attacking half, where Esther Vissia outran two Freeland defenders and buried the game-winning goal with just over 12 minutes remaining. Fremont protected the lead the rest of the way to secure the shutout victory and improve to 14-7-2 on the season.

The win was particularly meaningful for the Packers, who reached the Regional Final during the 2023-24 season only to see their postseason run end with a 2-0 loss to Freeland. Tuesday’s victory not only sent Fremont back to the regional championship match but also provided a measure of redemption against the program that denied them a trip to the state semifinals two years ago.

Now, the challenge becomes even greater. Fremont will face Traverse City St. Francis (15-4-2) on Thursday at Clare High School with a Regional 9 championship and a berth in the Division 3 State Semifinals on the line.

The Gladiators advanced to the final in dominant fashion, overwhelming Howard City Tri-County 8-0 in their regional semifinal. Earlier this season, Traverse City St. Francis handed Fremont a 7-1 defeat on April 18, making the Gladiators the favorite on paper entering Thursday’s showdown.

A closer look at the two teams shows why St. Francis has earned that reputation. The Gladiators own victories over quality opponents including Big Rapids, Kingsley, Boyne City, Ludington, and Mount Pleasant Sacred Heart while also testing themselves against larger-school programs such as Holland and Northville. Their postseason run has been equally impressive, outscoring district and regional opponents 20-1.

Fremont, however, enters the matchup as a much different team than the one that traveled north in April. The Packers have won five straight postseason contests, defeating Orchard View, Whitehall, Hart, and Freeland while outscoring opponents 24-1 during that stretch. Along the way, they have relied on a balanced attack, disciplined defense, and timely play from leaders throughout the lineup.

For the Packers, Thursday represents more than just another playoff game. It is a chance to avenge an earlier-season loss and capture a regional championship.

Kickoff is scheduled for 5 p.m. Thursday at Clare High School, with a trip to the Division 3 State Semifinals hanging in the balance.

Western Michigan Christian Falls in Heartbreaker

Western Michigan Christian’s season came to an emotional end in Division 4 regional play, dropping a 2-1 contest to defending state champion Kalamazoo Christian.

The Warriors battled back after trailing 1-0 at halftime, finally evening the score when freshman Sophia DeJonge found the back of the net with 27 minutes remaining. However, Kalamazoo Christian responded just minutes later with the eventual game-winner. WMC created several quality scoring opportunities throughout the night, including shots that struck both the post and crossbar, but could not find the equalizer. The Warriors finish the season with a 9-8-2 record.

Shelby’s Season Ends in Regional Semifinals

The Shelby Tigers saw their postseason run come to a close with a 3-0 loss to Ovid-Elsie in Division 4 regional action.

Ovid-Elsie controlled much of the possession throughout the contest and carried a 2-0 lead into halftime. Shelby continued to battle but could not generate enough scoring chances against a strong Marauders defense. Despite the loss, the Tigers close the year as district champions and can look back on another successful season.

Reeths-Puffer’s Historic Season Concludes

Reeths-Puffer’s memorable season ended with a 3-1 loss to Gaylord in the Division 2 Regional Semifinals.

The Rockets fell behind 2-0 in the first half and couldn’t recover despite a late goal from junior standout Jaslynn Kops, who added her school-record 26th goal of the season. Reeths-Puffer finishes 12-8-1 after capturing its first district championship since 2014 and earning its first victory over rival Mona Shores in a decade.
