The MHSAA playoffs kicked off on Friday. We see some squads in our coverage area advance, as well as some schools falling in the District Semifinal.
Standish Sterling 52 – Mason County Central 30
It feels like an upset due to MCC having such a great regular season, they fall to Standish Sterling. Peyton Merz however rushed for 180 yards and a touchdown. Mason County Central finishes the season (8-2).
Newaygo 30 – Montague 17
Montague put up a solid fight in the first half but wasn’t enough to knock off an eight-win Newaygo team. Ryver Jarka and Fletcher Thommen were both big contributors in the loss.
Big Rapids 28 – Ludington 21
The Orioles gave it their all on Friday with the game coming down to the final minutes. Ludington and its QB Cam Gunsell had BR right where they wanted them at the five-yard line with 17 seconds to play. An interception by a Big Rapids defender would slam the door on what would be an upset on the number one team in the district.
Reed City 41 – Manistee 20
Newly hired head coach for the Mariners, Alvin Rischel, had its guys in the playoffs to start his head coaching career. However, the Mariners’ run would quickly come to a halt when they drew Reed City in the first round.
West Catholic 32 – Oakridge 14
We had somewhat of a ball game early in this one. The Eagles who gave up a touchdown in the first quarter, answered with a touchdown themselves. Eventually leading to just a 19-14 deficit at the half. The Falcons have too much horsepower and drove Oakridge out of the playoffs 32-14.
Mona Shores 28 – Traverse City West 0
With state championship aspirations, the Sailors took care of business on Friday and sent TC West packing. Mona Shores posted its third shutout of the season. Now they take on Byron Center in a rematch for a district title.
Whitehall 28 – Forest Hills Eastern 21
After a rough first quarter, the Vikings rallied on the road and got to take on Big Rapids for a district title next Friday. Gavin Craner had himself a night, rushing for a buck 50 and a touchdown.
North Muskegon 56 – Evart 7
North Muskegon, along with Mona Shores have high hopes of making it to Ford Field. After its performance last night, it leaves people with zero doubt that they can do that. Bryce Colbert has been a huge part of this team all season throwing for 223 yards and three touchdowns. The Norse now face Mcbain next week.
