Quick starts in both games fuel Whitehall’s baseball sweep of Montague

Vikings cruise past Wildcats with 11-0 and 10-1 victories.

MONTAGUE — Visiting Whitehall wasted no time taking control against rival Montague in both of the teams’ West Michigan Conference Lakes Division baseball games on Tuesday.

Whitehall scored seven runs in the first inning of an 11-0, five-inning victory in Game 1, then the Vikings put up four in the first in a 10-1 win in Game 2 against the Wildcats.

Whitehall improves its overall record to 7-4 and its WMC Lakes record to 2-2. Montague is 5-9 and 3-3, respectively.

In the first game, Kyle Stratton and Isaac VanAmberg had two hits apiece to lead Whitehall, while Ryne Christensen and Noah Meinert came through with a triple and double, respectively, for the Vikings. Christensen also earned the pitching win by scattering six hits, striking out five, and walking none in five innings of work.

Eli Petersen paced Montague in Game 1 with two hits.

In the second game, Whitehall had only six hits but Montague committed six errors. Christensen was 2-for-2 at the plate for the Vikings with two runs scored, while Stratton scored three runs and Brock Morningstar drove in three.

Morningstar also picked up the pitching win for the Vikings, allowing one run on four hits while striking out five and walking three in 3 1/3 innings.
