This past weekend was jam-packed with softball regional semi-finals and finals games around the state. The season has made its way to the state finals and the homestretch to many campaigns, as well as many squads going home with either a district or regional loss.
Among our coverage area, we had five softball teams make it to the regional round, and only two of them are advancing to the top eight in their respective division.
Ravenna matches up against Buchanan for the third straight season in the exact round. Holton advances to play against Saginaw Michigan Lutheran Seminary.
Below we have results from each regional game from this past weekend:
Gaylord defeats Oakridge, 1-0
The Eagles were shut out and only tallied two hits; however, Gaylord’s lone run came off of an error in the bottom of the fourth, which made the loss hurt that much more. Kelcey Osborne hit a double in the top of the 7th with just one out, but back-to-back groundouts halted and ended the Eagles’ campaign.
Kylee Willea tossed a gem that included six innings of work, allowing just two hits and striking out three.
Grand Haven wins semifinal, falls in regional final to Hudsonville
Backed by a no-hitter from Lorelei Chciuk, the Bucs defeated Byron Center 2-0 in the semifinal game. Bri Borgman knocked in both of Grand Haven’s RBIs, one in the third and the other in the sixth. Chciuk allowed just two baserunners in the act of a free pass and struck out 14 hitters in seven innings.
In the finals, Grand Haven ran into powerhouse Hudsonville, who very well could be state champs when it’s all said and done. Borgman and Chciuk each collected a hit apiece, as the Bucs could only muster two hits in the 9-0 loss.
Ravenna blows out both Central Montcalm and Calvin Christian on its way to a regional title
After the two victories on Saturday, Ravenna now holds a ten-game winning streak heading into the state quarterfinals. Natalie Rosel, Addison Gillard, and Riley Homoly all led the charge offensively against Central Montcalm, contributing multiple RBIs. Gillard tossed four innings from the circle and allowed just two hits in the 15-0 win.
Rosel racked up 16 strikeouts in the finals game against Calvin Christian and was backed by seven runs by her offense that included a 3-4 performance at the plate from Emily Postema. Ravenna held on to its big four-run fourth inning to advance with a 7-0 win.
Holton wins a pair of tight games to advance to the quarterfinals
The Red Devils defeated Bellaire 1-0, with the lone run coming off of a sacrifice bunt in the top of the third. With one out in the inning, Abigail Isabell laid down a bunt to score Aubrey Goyings from third. Kenzie Greene tossed a flawless seven innings, giving up four hits on zero runs while striking out 10 hitters.
Greene took the ball for the regional final and completed her day with no runs given up. Her final line on the day was 14 IP, 7 H, 0 R, and 23 K’s. Greene also contributed the only RBI for Holton. Isabell had two hits, and McKee and Grace Thompsen added one each. The 4-0 win advances Holton to the final eight and adds yet another regional title to the program.
Holton will play Michigan Lutheran Seminary Tuesday at 4 p.m.
Ravenna advances to a rematch against Buchanan Tuesday at 3 p.m.
