Shelby Ends Five-Year Hart Softball Run, Captures District Crown

District championship Saturday delivered memorable moments across West Michigan, as Ravenna continued its dominance, North Muskegon captured its first district title since 2021, Holton celebrated a championship sweep, and Shelby authored one of the day’s biggest stories by ending Hart’s district dynasty.

The Shelby Tigers are the new queens of Oceana County softball.

Shelby snapped Hart’s five-year district championship streak Saturday, defeating the rival Pirates 8-1 in the Division 3 district final and avenging last season’s opening-round tournament loss.

After splitting the regular-season series, the Tigers delivered their best performance when it mattered most. Shelby broke open a close game with a four-run fourth inning, highlighted by a two-run single from Jayna Burmeister.

Burmeister also dominated in the circle, allowing just three hits while striking out 12 as the Tigers improved to 26-11 and advanced to regional play.

Jordan Wolting and Emma Stovall each collected two hits for Shelby, while Burmeister added a solo home run. Hart’s lone run came in the fourth inning after Caydence Bateson doubled and later scored.

The victory marked a changing of the guard in Oceana County softball and sent Shelby into next week’s regional tournament full of confidence. The Tigers will continue their postseason run Saturday at Ravenna, where they will face Morley Stanwood in a Division 3 regional semifinal at 12:30 p.m. with a trip to the regional championship game on the line.
