Shelby’s Joseph Hayes wins CatchMark Player of the Week (Jan. 17-22)

Nearly half of total vote lands Shelby basketball star as Player of the Week.

Voters have determined that Shelby boys basketball star Joseph Hayes is the CatchMark Player of the Week for Jan. 17-22.

This was Hayes’ second nomination of the season, and the second nomination for the Shelby boys basketball team.

Shelby senior Joseph Hayes has made quite a name so far this basketball season. The versatile guard contributes on both ends of the floor for the Tigers and has been one of the more consistent players in the league.

Last week alone, Hayes tallied 18 points, 12 rebounds, 4 assists and 3 steals against a league-leading Ravenna team. He followed up that performance with 20 points, 9 rebounds, 3 assists and 3 steals against Whitehall later in the week. The senior has led the Tigers to a 4-2 league record and is noted as a good sport by opponents.

If you thought Hayes’ performance last week was impressive, you should take a peak at what he accomplished this week. On Thursday, Jan. 28, the dominate guard put up a remarkable 40 points in a rivalry win against Hart. This feat simply reinforces his selection as CatchMark’s Player of the Week.

Hayes’ weekly performance received 49.6 percent of the total vote, landing him in the No. 1 spot. Whitehall wrestler Max Brown followed with a runner-up finish and 25.5 percent of the total vote.
