Zeerip father, sons square off as coaches in wrestling dual (Dec. 14 WMC roundup)

FREMONT — Collectively, the Zeerips have seen it all in the sport of wrestling.

Here’s something that Craig Zeerip and sons Justin and Collin had not seen prior to Wednesday: Each other as opposing coaches in a dual meet.

Fremont coach Craig Zeerip squared off with sons Justin and Collin Zeerip, co-coaches at Whitehall, during a West Michigan Conference tri-meet at Fremont. The sons’ team got the better of their pops’ squad, 54-17, but competition, respect and love were evident.

In other matches, Fremont defeated Montague (54-30) and Whitehall beat Montague (61-12).

DOUBLE-WINNERS

  • Double-winners for Whitehall included Cody Manzo (106), Max Krukowski (126), Blake English (138), Ryne Christensen (144 and 150), Ryan Goodrich (165), Jackson Cook (190) and Shane Cook (285).
  • Double-winners for Fremont included Killian Prewitt (120), Tee Ward (144), Trey Myers (175) and Michael Romero (215 and 285).
  • Double-winners for Montague included Jimmy Thommen (113), Christopher Aebig (132) and Tristan Winkleblack (140).

ROMERO RECORDS 100TH WIN

Fremont senior Michael Romero recorded his 100th career victory with a fall in 55 seconds against Montague’s Joe Winkelman in a 285-pound match.

HARD-FOUGHT MATCH

In perhaps the best match of the night, Fremont junior Trey Myers edged Whitehall sophomore Wyatt Jenkins, 4-3, in a 175-pound match.

ELSEWHERE IN THE WEST MICHIGAN CONFERENCE

HART DOMINATES AT OAKRIDGE: Hart defeated North Muskegon (72-6) and Oakridge (78-0) in a WMC tri-meet at Oakridge.

Winning two matches apiece for the Pirates were Halen Boos (120), Logan Jorissen (126), JoseLuis Andaverde (132), Bryce Jorissen (138), Connor Edwards (144), Josue Salgado (150), Guillermo Ortega (157), Alex Hicks (165), Darice Mosley (175), Zane Thomas (190), Adrian Tice (215) and Ivan Lara (285).

BIG DAY FOR ORCHARD VIEW: Orchard View defeated Shelby (44-25) and Holton (60-12) to go 2-0 in a quad at Mason County Central. The host Spartans were 1-1 on the day with a win over Holton (54-18) and loss to Shelby (42-36).

Winning two matches for Mason County Central were Hunter Sanford (113), Zane McCabe (132), Colter Kirchner (144), Brayden Overmyer (150) and Gradyn Wilson (285). For Holton, David Addison went 2-0.

Neither Orchard View nor Shelby reported individual results.

HESPERIA SWEEPS AT RAVENNA: Hesperia went 2-0 in a quad meet at Ravenna, beating the host Bulldogs (66-18) and Grant (54-27). Ravenna finished 1-1 on the night with a 60-6 victory over Ludington.

Stephen Priese (113), Blake Sayer (120), Skyler Stalbaum (138), Scott Quinn (150), Alex Gleason (157), Deegan Klaus (175), Logan Kammer (190) and Noah Walker (285).

Going 2-0 for Ravenna were Jacob Craine (106), Christian Dohm (132) and Taytum Goerbig (144).
