SPRING LAKE — The last time Whitehall’s boys basketball team had won a district championship, Christian Subdon was a freshman and Camden Thompson was in diapers.
My, have they grown.
Friday night, Subdon coached and Thompson starred as Whitehall defeated arch-rival Montague, 57-39, in a Division 2 district title clash at Spring Lake High School.
Thompson, a 6-foot-4 freshman, posted game highs of 15 points and 16 rebounds as the red-hot Vikings (17-5) won for the 15th time in 17 games and punched their ticket to Monday’s 5:30 p.m. regional semifinal game against Sparta (11-12) at Forest Hills Eastern High School.
Sparta defeated Fremont, 53-40, in a district final Friday.
Senior Red Watson played a strong floor game for Whitehall with 11 points, five assists, three steals and one block against only one turnover. Sophomore Kyle Stratton added nine points, senior Isaac DeHart scored six and senior Brodie Fogus played an inspired game with five points, eight rebounds and five blocks for the balanced Vikings. Junior Nate Bolley had four points.
Whitehall took control in the second quarter, when it outscored Montague 22-8.
Senior Colton Blankstrom and sophomore Owen Raeth led Montague (16-7) with nine points apiece. Junior Braeden Johnston had seven points, while senior Tugg Nichols added five points and four steals. Senior Tate Stine finished with four points, four rebounds and two assists, while sophomore Isaiah Atchison had 13 rebounds.
This was the first time in 41 years that Whitehall’s and Montague’s boys basketball teams had met in the district finals. Both teams have now won two such matchups.
The West Michigan Conference champion Vikings swept the Wildcats in the regular season.
Montague had won 12 of its last 14 entering Friday’s game.
