Weare Brothers Shine as WMC Tops Covenant; Marcus Impresses in Season-Opening Golf Action

The opening week of the boys golf season brought tough conditions, breakout performances, and a memorable showing from Western Michigan Christian in one of the highlight matches of the week.

Spotlight Match: WMC vs. Covenant Christian

Western Michigan Christian turned in one of its best rounds of the young season, defeating Covenant Christian 164-178 in a standout performance.

Lucas Weare led the charge with a career-best 38, pacing a balanced and confident WMC lineup. Zach Weare followed with a 40, while Ian Vanderstelt added a 41. Alex Annema carded a 45, and both Josh Weare and Quint Menefee finished with 46.

Beyond the scorecard, the match featured a special moment for the program, Lucas, Zach, and Josh Weare all competed together at the varsity level, a rare occurrence made even more meaningful with family in attendance.

The combination of low scores and depth across the lineup showed just how dangerous WMC can be early in the season.

WMC vs. Fruitport (Muskegon Country Club)

WMC also picked up a 179-190 win over Fruitport earlier in the week.

Annema and Zach Weare led the Warriors with rounds of 44, while Reid Stall added a 45. Vanderstelt and Braeden Olsen each shot 46, and Lucas Weare finished with a 47.

Fruitport found a major bright spot in sophomore Chase Marcus, who fired a match-best 43 in foggy conditions.

Tyler Cuti and Landon Lodholtz each added 46, while Eli Cuti shot a 50.

Forest Hills Invitational (Egypt Valley)

Reeths-Puffer opened its season in a challenging field at Egypt Valley, finishing 21st with a team score of 383.

Kristian Brown led the Rockets with an 83, improving by 10 strokes from last year and recording two birdies.

Ian Voka added an 85 in his debut, while Liam Thomas (105), Beckett Mathes (110), and Carter Hekkema (114) rounded out the lineup. Hekkema highlighted his day with a 20-foot birdie putt on the opening hole.

Mullenhurst Delton Invitational

WMC continued its strong week by battling through heavy rain at the Mullenhurst Delton Invitational, finishing first among Division 4 teams and ninth overall.

Bode Powell led the Warriors with an 86, finishing 20th in a field of more than 70 golfers.

Gavin Macher shot 92, Edgar Vazquez added a 95 with a birdie, and Brode Austin (95) and Izzabella Kolenda (97) rounded out the scoring.

Looking Ahead

Reeths-Puffer opens OK-Green play at The Meadows, while Fruitport’s OK-Silver jamboree was postponed due to weather.

After just one week, it’s clear the area is loaded with talent and already producing some memorable moments.
