Mona Shores made the biggest statement of the week at Friday’s Greater Muskegon Athletic Association City Championship, battling through cold, windy conditions at Western Michigan Christian and leaving with a sweep of the team titles.
The Sailors boys scored 117 points to end Whitehall’s four-year reign as city champion, while the Mona Shores girls held off Fruitport 122-116 in a tight race for the girls crown.
Kevin White and Ryan Opsommer led the Mona Shores boys with dominant performances. White won the 100-meter dash in 11.13 seconds and added a 200-meter title in 23.01. Opsommer swept the hurdles, winning the 110 hurdles in 15.25 and the 300 hurdles in 40.31.
The pair also helped power two winning relays. White and Opsommer joined Jaylon Millstead and Max Kammeraad to win the 4×200 relay in 1:32.02, then teamed with Jayden Moye and Kassian McKenzie Thompson to close the meet with a 4×400 victory in 3:36.24.
