District championship weekend is where seasons are defined. For some teams, it’s the end of the road. For others, it’s a chance to keep chasing a dream all the way to East Lansing.
Saturday’s district baseball action across West Michigan produced dominant pitching performances, rivalry battles, championship celebrations, and one of the area’s biggest surprises of the postseason. When the final outs were recorded, Spring Lake, Shelby, Holton, and Manistee had secured district championships and earned spots in Wednesday’s regional semifinals.
No result was more surprising than what unfolded in Shelby.
Shelby Turns the Tables on Montague
Coming into the Division 3 District 73 championship game, Montague appeared to have all the advantages.
The Wildcats entered the day 26-5 and had already swept Shelby during the regular season. They had one of the area’s most consistent pitching staffs, a lineup capable of manufacturing runs, and momentum after defeating North Muskegon earlier in the day.
Montague looked every bit like the favorite. But Shelby had something different this time. Shelby had DayDay Garcia. The senior right-hander delivered a championship performance, throwing a complete-game six-hitter and leading the Tigers to a 2-1 victory over the Wildcats to capture the district title.
Montague struck first in the second inning when Eli Petersen and Cole Herremans recorded back-to-back hits before Karter Johnson drove home Petersen with an RBI single to give the Wildcats a 1-0 lead.
Shelby answered in the third inning. Garcia worked a walk, stole second base, and eventually came around to score as the Tigers evened the game at 1-1.
From there, Garcia and Herremans traded zeros. Herremans was dominant in his own right, striking out eight batters and allowing just four hits over 5 2/3 innings. But the Tigers finally broke through in the sixth.
Evan Waller reached base and Neil Gowell followed with a walk. With runners aboard, Jaden Furman delivered the biggest hit of the afternoon, lining an RBI double that scored Waller and gave Shelby a 2-1 lead.
Furman finished 2-for-3 with the game-winning RBI and provided the offensive spark Shelby needed in a game where runs were at a premium.
The one-run advantage was all Garcia would need. The senior completed all seven innings, allowing just one run on six hits while striking out four and walking none. He threw only 75 pitches and consistently kept Montague from stringing together a big inning.
When the Wildcats did put the ball in play, Shelby’s defense answered. Trevor Weiss made a key catch in the sixth inning, Waller came through with a diving grab in center field during the seventh, and Gowell anchored a defense that played error-free baseball in the district final.
Montague collected six hits, including two-hit performances from Cooper Bradley and Petersen, but Garcia never blinked.
When he recorded the final out, Shelby had completed one of the biggest upsets of district championship weekend.

Shelby (21-6) advances to the Division 3 Regional Semifinal against Kent City on Wednesday at 5 p.m. at Kent City High School.
Spring Lake Captures Another District Championship
The Spring Lake Lakers continued their recent postseason success by winning their third district championship in four years. The Lakers opened district play Saturday with a dominant offensive performance against Whitehall. Spring Lake erupted for eight runs in the first inning and cruised to a 14-4 victory in six innings. Owen Smies paced the offense with two hits and five RBI while Oliver Smies earned the victory on the mound.
Spring Lake (26-7) advances to face Sparta in the Division 2 Regional Semifinal on Wednesday at 5 p.m. at Sparta High School.
Holton Ends a 19-Year Wait
One of the best stories from district weekend came from Holton. The Red Devils captured their first district championship since 2007 by winning the Division 4 District 107 title. Holton opened the day with a 9-1 victory over Hesperia behind a complete-game effort from Fisher Mirkle, who struck out seven.
Holton (11-15) advances to face Mount Pleasant Sacred Heart in the Division 4 Regional Semifinal on Wednesday at 5 p.m. at Coleman High School.
Manistee Claims District 72 Championship
Manistee survived one of the most challenging roads of any local district champion. The Chippewas opened the day with a thrilling 9-8 semifinal victory over Evart before turning around and defeating Leroy Pine River in the championship game.
Manistee (13-16) advances to face Harrison in the Division 3 Regional Semifinal on Wednesday at 5 p.m. at Manistee High School.
