For three innings Tuesday afternoon at Kalamazoo College, Ravenna found itself in unfamiliar territory.
The Bulldogs trailed.
A Bronson team with nothing to lose scratched across two runs with two outs in the third inning, grabbed a 2-1 lead and briefly put the pressure on one of Michigan’s most dominant softball programs.
What happened next served as a reminder of exactly why Ravenna is back in the state semifinals.
The Bulldogs responded with a nine-run avalanche over the next two innings, turning a tense quarterfinal into a statement victory and punching their ticket back to Michigan State University’s Secchia Stadium with a convincing 12-2 win.
Now, Ravenna is two victories away from making history.
Bulldogs Unleash Offensive Fury
Bronson struck first after Ravenna grabbed an early 1-0 lead in the opening inning when Taylor Nutt’s line drive plated Reese Herremans.
The Vikings answered in the third, stringing together a two-out rally to take a 2-1 advantage, the first runs Ravenna had allowed during the postseason.
The lead didn’t last long.
Junior ace Natalie Rosel ignited the comeback in the fourth inning with a two-run single that scored Kendyl Luce and Addy Woodring, giving the Bulldogs a 3-2 lead.
A few batters later, senior Emily Postema delivered the biggest hit of the inning, lacing a two-run double that brought home Rosel and Sophie Robinson and extended the lead to 5-2.
The Bulldogs were just getting started.
Ravenna exploded for five more runs in the fifth inning. Luce drove in Taylor Nutt with an RBI single before Woodring followed with an RBI double. Robinson added a sacrifice fly, and then junior slugger Reese Herremans delivered the knockout blow.
With Rosel aboard, Herremans crushed a two-run home run to left-center field, stretching the advantage to 10-2 and sending the Ravenna faithful into celebration mode.
The Bulldogs added two insurance runs in the seventh inning on Herremans’ RBI fielder’s choice and Postema’s sacrifice fly.
By game’s end, Ravenna had pounded out 15 hits and once again showcased the depth that has made the Bulldogs one of the state’s most complete teams.
Rosel Dominates Again
While the offense stole headlines, Rosel continued her remarkable postseason run in the circle.
The Central Michigan commit settled in after the third inning and shut down Bronson the rest of the way, allowing six hits while striking out eight in a complete-game performance.
Rosel also starred at the plate, finishing with three hits, two RBIs and three runs scored.
Herremans finished 2-for-4 with a home run, double, three RBIs and three runs scored.
Postema added two hits and three RBIs, while Woodring collected two hits and an RBI. Morrissey chipped in two hits, and Luce, Nutt and Robinson each drove in a run.
Bronson concluded a tremendous season at 35-6.
Ravenna returns to Secchia Stadium looking to reach its first-ever state championship game, but standing in the way is a battle-tested New Lothrop squad coming off a 3-2, 10-inning victory over Millington.
The Hornets have won eight straight games and navigated a challenging postseason path, while the Bulldogs have been one of Michigan’s most dominant teams all season, combining explosive offense with standout pitching.
Matchup Breakdown
Ravenna’s Advantage: The Bulldogs have scored double-digit runs in 26 games this season and feature one of the state’s deepest lineups. Behind ace Natalie Rosel and a veteran core that has experienced the state semifinals before, Ravenna has the tools to make another deep run.
New Lothrop’s Advantage: The Hornets thrive in close games and have relied on strong pitching and defense throughout the postseason. Their ability to win tight, low-scoring contests makes them a dangerous opponent.
Prediction
New Lothrop has proven it can compete with anyone, but Ravenna’s offensive depth, postseason experience and dominant pitching give the Bulldogs the edge.
A victory would send Ravenna to the state championship game for the first time in program history and move the Bulldogs one step closer to becoming Muskegon County’s first softball state champion.
