Four returnees gives Mason County Central high hopes for 2021-21 girls basketball season

Mason County Central returns four starters from last season

Mason County Central’s girls basketball team was unable to attend the VanDyke Mortgage West Michigan Conference Media Day last Wednesday at the Viking Athletic Center (VAC) in Whitehall.

Through correspondence with coach Mike Weinert, CatchMark SportsNet developed the season preview for the Spartans.

COACH: Mike Weinert (12th season).

LAST YEAR’S RECORDS: 6-14 overall (3-11 West Michigan Conference, tied for 7th place).

RETURNING STARTERS: Wren Nelson (Sophomore, Forward, 6-3); Adria Quigley (Senior, Guard, 5-5); Jaden Petersen (Senior, Guard, 5-7); Grace Weinert (Sophomore, Guard, 5-8).

NEW PROSPECT: Maxie Green (Junior, Guard, 5-6).

STRENGTHS: The Spartans enter the season with increased experience after ending the 2020-21 season on a high note. After making an appearance in the district finals last season, MCC’s confidence has made a big leap. Individual growth and new players increase the all-around athleticism and skill for the Spartans.

WEAKNESSES: Mason County Central will face its greatest challenge in post play, as two newcomers will fill those positions.

SEASON OUTLOOK: The Spartans will be an improved team this season and return four starters from last year. The experience and drive will open an opportunity to pick up some wins that were unable to capture last year.

The addition of two young post players and junior guard, Maxie Green will increase the athleticism for the Spartans who will compete in a tough conference again this year.
