Shelby’s 2021-22 girls basketball team attended the VanDyk Mortgage West Michigan Conference media day last Wednesday at the Viking Athletic Center (VAC) in Whitehall.

COACH: Sarah Wolting (12th season).
LAST YEAR’S RECORDS: 10-9 overall (7-7 West Michigan Conference, 4th place).
RETURNING STARTERS: Kendall Zoulek (Senior, Guard/Forward, 5-9); Lauren Brown (Senior, Center, 6-1); Ella Olmstead (Senior, Forward, 5-9).
KEY RETURNEES: Aubrey Klotz (Junior, Guard, 5-6); Megan Sly (Senior, Guard, 5-6).
NEW PROSPECT: Molli Schultz (Sophomore, Guard, 5-4).
STRENGTHS: The Tigers should be able to rely on their leadership and experience from the senior group. They have good height and should be able to outrebound most opponents. Wolting believes her team’s outside shooting should be tough, and the Tigers are good passers, too.
WEAKNESSES: Shelby is still seeking somebody to step up and run the offense from the point-guard position. With only nine players on the roster, the Tigers aren’t very deep, so they cannot get into foul trouble and they have to be in good shape.
SEASON OUTLOOK: Shelby is looking to be one of the top teams in the conference this season, eyeing to make a bit of a postseason run.
“It is a great group of girls and the seniors have a special place in my heart because it is girls that my daughter, Kendall (Zoulek), has grown up with and played with since third grade,” Wolting said.
This will be the fourth varsity basketball season for three Shelby seniors: Zoulek, Brown and Olmstead.
Shelby should get a bit of a boost with the presence of Rick Zoulek on the bench as much as he possibly can be. He is Shelby’s legendary boys coach, the father of Sarah Wolting and grandfather of Kendall Zoulek.
