Ludington Claims Title at Shelby Invitational; Local Teams Show Early-Season Growth

The chill of early spring did not slow down the competition. If anything, it made every shot matter just a little more.

On a bright but brisk day at Oceana Golf Club, golfers from across West Michigan gathered for the Shelby Invitational, one of the first true measuring stick events of the season. With 14 teams in the field and little room for error, the round quickly turned into a test of focus, consistency, and composure.

By the end of the day, Ludington rose above the field, putting together a strong and steady performance to claim the team title. Shelby, competing on its home course, delivered an impressive showing of its own, finishing runner up and feeding off the energy of a supportive crowd.

At the top of the individual leaderboard, Ludington’s Alec Rodenbeck set the tone early and never let up. His one under par 71 earned him medalist honors and stood as one of the most complete performances of the day. Close behind, Shelby’s Titan Carter gave the home fans something to cheer about, finishing with an even par 72 to secure runner up honors and continue his strong start to the season.

Behind the leaders, the competition remained tight throughout the afternoon, with several teams clustered within just a few strokes of one another.

Whitehall showed clear progress from earlier in the week as the lineup delivered a more balanced performance. Montague continues to build momentum behind a young group that is beginning to find its rhythm. Ravenna, Hesperia, and Oakridge all remained within striking distance, highlighting just how competitive the field was from top to bottom.

Individual standouts continued beyond the top two spots, with John DeJonge finishing eighth and Shea Iwaniw placing thirteenth, reinforcing the depth of talent across the region.

More than just another early season event, the Shelby Invitational offered a glimpse into how the season may unfold. Scores are tightening, teams are settling in, and confidence is beginning to build. If Saturday was any indication, the race for the top spots this spring is going to be competitive from start to finish.
