It might’ve been the coldest May round of golf I’ve ever experienced. Cold, rainy, windy — just flat-out miserable. But that didn’t stop the WMC Lakes boys from powering through and closing out the season with a bang.
White Lake Golf Club played host to the final 9-hole conference jamboree, and despite the less-than-ideal conditions, the scores didn’t seem to mind. Four of the top five golfers broke 40, with Max Scharp taking medalist honors after carding a +1 (36). Right behind him were Oakridge’s Drake Chase and Isaac Utzinger, both posting +3 (38s), along with Alec Rodenbeck, who matched that score. Rounding out the top five was Fremont’s Sam Content, who shot a +5 (40).
Pretty impressive stuff for a group of guys probably struggling to hold onto their clubs.
In the team standings, Ludington came out on top with a 169 (+29), followed by Fremont at 172 and Manistee at 177.
With that, Ludington also clinched the overall WMC Lakes conference title, finishing the seven-match slate with a total team score of 1193 — winning it by 21 strokes and jumping up from third place a year ago.
As for individual honors, Fremont’s Sam Content claimed the All-Conference title with a scoring average of 38.83 across the seven events.
