Senior quartet leads Montague back from early deficit in boys basketball win at Fruitport

Wildcats trailed 13-0 at the start, but right the ship en route to 61-48 nonleague victory over Trojans.

It was not the start that coach Nick Thaler and his Montague boys basketball team had in mind Tuesday at Fruitport, but the finish was a lot more encouraging.

Behind four seniors, Montague rallied from an early deficit and posted a 61-48 nonleague victory over host Fruitport, which built a 13-0 lead from the start of the contest.

The Trojans led 19-14 after the first quarter, but the Wildcats outscored their hosts by at least four points in each of the final three quarters.

Isaiah Atchison, a 6-foot-8 senior, packed the stat sheet with 17 points, 12 rebounds, seven steals, five blocks, and four assists for Montague.

Paul Olson had a near double-double with 14 points and nine rebounds, Owen Raeth scored a dozen, and Jakob Heiss added nine points to round out the aforementioned seniors who led the way.

Montague improves to 4-1 overall, including three straight wins. The Wildcats host arch-rival Whitehall (3-0) on Thursday in the first of two regular-season matchups.

No stats or details were submitted for Fruitport, which slips to 1-2 on the young season.
