Versatile Hart basketball player Abby Hicks adds Player of Week to repertoire

Junior guard is the fifth Pirates athlete this winter to earn distinction.

Hart’s Abby Hicks can do just about everything on the basketball court.

The 5-foot-7 junior guard typically packs the stat sheet for the Pirates. You can add another distinction to her resume: CatchMark SportsNet West Michigan Conference Player of the Week.

Hicks won this week’s fan poll, which featured six winter sports athletes from the West Michigan Conference for their performances spanning the week of Jan. 30-Feb. 4, 2023.

Hicks finished with 1,136 of 2,809 total votes in the poll. Whitehall wrestling senior Shane Cook finished runner-up in the fan poll with 672 votes. See complete voting results for this week’s poll at the bottom of this story.

Hicks is the fifth Hart athlete to earn Player of the Week honors this winter. Other teammates to have won the poll include Aspen Boutell and Addi Hovey, as well as other Pirates athletes Parker Hovey and Blake Weirich.

Hicks helped Hart’s girls basketball team post three victories last week.

In Monday’s 61-27 home win over White Cloud, Hicks recorded 18 points, three rebounds, eight steals and three assists. In Tuesday’s 55-29 home win over Morley Stanwood, Hicks scored a team-high 20 points to go with eight steals, six rebounds and three assists. In Thursday’s 65-29 victory over visiting Ravenna, Hicks had 11 points, five assists and six steals.

Hart (15-2, 9-0 WMC Rivers Division) can clinch a share of the Rivers Division title with a home win over Mason County Central (14-2, 8-1) tonight.
