Wrestling enters the spotlight in the latest CatchMark SportsNet West Michigan Conference Player of the Week fan poll.

Six winter sports athletes from the conference who stood out during the week of Jan. 30-Feb. 4, 2023, have been nominated. Now it’s time for you to vote for Player of the Week.

The poll can be found at the bottom of this story after brief capsules on the nominees. Voting is open and will continue until noon on Friday, Feb. 10.

Athletes are listed alphabetically:

CHASE ALBRIGHT, Holton bowling

The Red Devils senior is a nominee for a second straight week. On Jan. 28, Albright broke the school record with the 279 he rolled in the Reeths-Puffer Invitational at Northway Lanes. He kept it going in a West Michigan Conference dual against Oakridge last Wednesday, when he shot 209-251 in leading Holton to a 17-13 victory over Oakridge.

SHANE COOK, Whitehall wrestling

The Vikings senior notched win No. 150 in his career during the West Michigan Conference tournament Saturday at Orchard View. Cook, who wrestles primarily in the 285-pound weight class, rolled through the tournament. He received a bye in the first round, then recorded three pins — two of them in less than 90 seconds. Cook is now 44-0 on the season for a Whitehall team that’s ranked fourth in Division 3.

ABBY HICKS, Hart basketball

The 5-foot-7 junior guard helped the Pirates post three more victories last week. In Monday’s 61-27 home win over White Cloud, Hicks recorded 18 points, three rebounds, eight steals and three assists. In Tuesday’s 55-29 home win over Morley Stanwood, Hicks scored a team-high 20 points to go with eight steals, six rebounds and three assists. In Thursday’s 65-29 victory over visiting Ravenna, Hicks had 11 points, five assists and six steals.

ANNA LUNDQUIST, Oakridge basketball

The 6-foot-2 junior posted a trio of double-doubles last week as the Eagles notched three more victories. In Tuesday’s 41-24 win over visiting Shelby, Lundquist flirted with a triple-double with 16 points, 11 rebounds, seven steals, three assists and three blocks. In Thursday’s 40-37 victory at Fremont, she totaled 18 points, 17 rebounds, three steals and two blocks. In Friday’s 55-50 win at Western Michigan Christian, she had 18 points, 14 rebounds, six steals and two blocks.

ZANE MCCABE, Mason County Central wrestling

The Spartans junior reached the 100-win milestone in his career during the West Michigan Conference tournament Saturday at Orchard View. McCabe beat Hart’s Austin Martinez (7-5) in the Rivers Division final of the tourney, then he defeated Whitehall’s Caden Varela (10-2 major decision) in the crossover finals. McCabe is 43-2 on the season wrestling in the 126-pound weight class.

NYVEAH WENDT, Mason County Central wrestling

The Spartans sophomore captured the title at the Midland Girls Invitational on Saturday. Wendt defeated Montague’s Savannah Winkleblack in the finals, 3-2. In the semifinals, she beat another returning state medalist, Gabrielle Murphy of Whittemore-Prescott, 1-0. Wendt, who competes at 110 or 113 pounds, is now 25-15 overall on the season, including 14-4 against female wrestlers.
