Vote for CatchMark Performance of the Week (May 16-21, 2022)

Each week, CatchMark SportsNet will highlight performances from the previous week of spring sports action in the West Michigan Conference.

VanDyk Mortgage brings you the CatchMark Performance of the Week.

The nominees are announced and voting opens on Wednesday. Voting closes at noon Friday. Shortly after, the winner of the CatchMark Performance of the Week will be announced.

Without further ado, here are the nominees for the CatchMark Performance of the Week for events spanning May 16-21, 2022. Read the description of each athlete’s achievements and cast your vote at the bottom of the story.

MAELIE HOPE, Whitehall track and field

The Vikings junior shattered her own school record with a toss of 143 feet, 9 inches in discus during the West Michigan Conference meet last Tuesday at Mason County Central. She also won the shot put at the WMC meet with a heave of 37-0. Three days later in a Division 2 regional at Zeeland, Hope toss the discus 143-9 again to win the event going away. She added a regional shot put title that day, going a personal-record 40-9.

ADDI HOVEY, Hart track and field

The Pirates freshman broke a Hart high jump record that had stood since 1983 by clearing 5 feet, 5 1/2 inches in the West Michigan Conference meet last Tuesday at Mason County Central. The effort also was a meet record. Hovey broke the record held by Annette (Farmer) Thompson, who had cleared 5-5 1/4. On Friday, also at Mason County Central, Hovey captured a Division 3 regional title with a leap of 5-3 to beat the runner-up by five inches.

HAYDEN MCDONALD, Montague baseball

The Wildcats senior drove in the game’s lone run with a double in a 1-0 victory over North Muskegon last Monday in the opener of a key West Michigan Conference sweep. In the nightcap, McDonald had three more hits, including a double, three RBIs and two runs scored in a 16-4 victory. Last Tuesday, McDonald had two hits in a 7-1 Game 1 win over Shelby that gave the Wildcats the outright conference title.

TROY MCMANUS, North Muskegon baseball

The junior left-hander struck out 13 in 6 2/3 innings of a 5-0 win over Fremont in Game 1 of a doubleheader last Friday. In Game 2, a 13-5 Norsemen victory, McManus went 2-for-4 with a double, triple, two RBIs and three runs scored. Last Monday, McManus suffered a tough 1-0 loss to Montague in a game where he allowed five hits, struck out five and walked none.
