MUSKEGON, Mich. – Four teams in the West Michigan Conference competed against each other in last night’s district tournament. Whitehall came into the night as the heavy favorite in a field that included Montague, Orchard View, and Oakridge.
After defeating Orchard View 74-6, Whitehall stood toe-to-toe against its rival, Montague. The Wildcats went up against Oakridge in their first-round match and won decisively 74-12.
Whitehall wasted no time jumping to an early 32-0 lead after a Cody Manzo forfeit win, Max Krukowski TF, Kolten Weiler Pin, and a Caden Varela TF.
Montague scored 12 points in the next two matches with wins from Gavyn Maddox and Fletcher Thommen. Those 12 would be the only points for the Wildcats all night as Whitehall won the next eight matches on the way to a 64-12 win.
“It’s always cool to bring home mittens. I’m really proud of the kids; I thought they wrestled really well tonight,” Whitehall coach Justin Zeerip said after the win.
Whitehall senior Gavin Craner came away with two more wins on Thursday night.
“He’s worked really hard; he’s a great leader for us. Overall, I couldn’t be prouder of the kid,” Zeerip said about the senior.
