WMC Boys Golf Preview: Depth, Star Power Set Stage for Competitive Season

Boys golf across the West Michigan Conference may not always grab the biggest headlines, but year after year it produces some of the most competitive and tightly contested races in the area. With proven medalists, experienced lineups, and emerging young talent spread across the conference, the 2026 season is shaping up to be another compelling run toward league titles.

Shelby could be one of the most intriguing teams in the conference this spring. In his ninth season leading the program, the Tigers’ coach believes this may be his most talented team yet, led by juniors Titan Carter and Rafael Davis and freshman Ivan Carter.

Titan Carter is already one of the conference’s premier players, having won back-to-back Rivers Division medalist honors and placed 14th at the 2025 state finals. Davis also returns after earning All-Conference honors last season, while Ivan Carter could make an immediate impact as a freshman. After fielding just four golfers a year ago, Shelby also brings improved depth, which could make the Tigers a real factor in the Rivers Division race.

Ludington enters as the team to beat after capturing last year’s Lakes Division title. The Orioles set the standard with consistent scoring and depth throughout the lineup, a formula that proved successful across the conference schedule. If key contributors return, Ludington will once again serve as the benchmark.

Fremont looks ready to challenge that top spot. The Packers return nearly their entire varsity lineup from a runner-up finish and are led by reigning conference medalist Sam Content, who posted an impressive 39 scoring average. With Reid Nelson coming off a top-10 finish as a freshman and a strong supporting cast including Joe Welsch, Breakin Kooistra, and Lucas Holmes, Fremont has both the talent and experience to make a serious push.

Manistee remains a steady contender and should once again be in the mix near the top. The Chippewas have built a reputation for consistent play and the ability to stay within striking distance, making them a threat in every jamboree.

Whitehall brings balance and upside into the season. The Vikings have shown they can compete with the conference’s best, and if they can put together consistent rounds across their lineup, they have the potential to move into contention and disrupt the expected order.

Montague continues to build toward that level. The Wildcats have been developing depth within the program and have shown flashes of strong play. If returning golfers take the next step, Montague could turn that potential into more consistent results this season.

Oakridge rounds out the field with the ability to produce standout individual performances. While team scores have varied, the Eagles have golfers capable of making noise in medalist races and influencing team standings in key meets.

With Shelby bringing back one of the conference’s top individual players, Ludington aiming to defend its title, Fremont pushing to break through, and several other teams capable of shaking up the standings, the WMC boys golf season promises to be competitive from start to finish. In a conference where every stroke matters, expect tight leaderboards, shifting momentum, and a championship race that remains undecided until the final putts drop.
