On a night where every point mattered, the story split in two very different directions. On the boys side, Whitehall left no doubt. On the girls side, it came down to the final events. The West Michigan Conference Lakes tri-meet at Manistee delivered both dominance and drama Tuesday, as Whitehall’s boys cruised to a sweep while the girls competition turned into a tightly contested battle between three familiar rivals.
Boys Meet: Whitehall dominates field
From the opening events, Whitehall set the tone, and never let it slip. The Vikings overpowered both Montague and host Manistee, posting decisive wins across the board:
- Whitehall 116, Montague 21
- Whitehall 111, Manistee 26
- Montague 77, Manistee 56
It wasn’t just winning, it was depth. Whitehall stacked points in nearly every event, led by standout performances on the track. Tim Vieira sprinted to victories in both the 100 (11.99) and 200 (23.69), setting the pace early and giving the Vikings momentum that carried throughout the meet.
In the distance events, Robert Jazwinski III took over, winning both the 1600 (4:29.98) and 3200 (9:30.90), controlling the races with consistency and endurance.
The dominance extended into the field. Caden Bowyer delivered in the discus (156’6”), Ayden Mendoza cleared the field in the high jump (6’6”), and Graysen Olstrom soared to a win in the pole vault (13’0”), showcasing Whitehall’s balance across all phases.
By the end of the meet, the Vikings had built an overwhelming advantage, turning a conference showdown into a statement performance.
Girls Meet: Battle goes down to the final events
If the boys meet was one-sided, the girls competition was anything but. Every team had its moment, and the scoring reflected just how tight the margins were:
- Montague 68, Whitehall 63
- Whitehall 65, Manistee 65 (tie)
- Manistee 68, Montague 64
The meet turned into a back-and-forth fight, with points shifting throughout the night. Manistee’s Hattie Driver delivered one of the top individual performances, sweeping the 100 (13.87), 200 (28.09), and 400 (1:02.30), consistently giving her team crucial points in the sprints.
Whitehall countered in the distance races, where Gabrielle Chevez controlled the longer events and provided a steady scoring presence. 800m: 2:49.86 1600m: 6:33.86 3200m: 14:55.88 (sweep).
Montague found its edge in the relays. The Wildcats’ teams stepped up in key moments, winning both the 4×100 (59.27: Celina Pruitt, Lillith Decker, Cadence Fox, Nora Wacholz) and 4×200 (1:58.71: Jenna Erickson, Gentry Knop, Annelyse Schneider, Addison Smith) relays, using speed and execution to swing valuable points in their favor.
With multiple events coming down to placements and every finish mattering, the meet stayed undecided deep into the competition, highlighting just how evenly matched the three programs were.
