As the season continues to build, athletes and teams across the area are beginning to separate themselves. This week delivered a mix of high-level competition, conference battles, and one standout performance that punched a ticket to the biggest stage.
Hart Rises to the Challenge at Byron Center Invitational
Stepping into a large, talent-heavy field at the Byron Center Bulldog Games, Hart didn’t just compete, they proved they belong.
Against one of the deepest fields of the season, the Pirates boys team placed fifth overall with 57 points, finishing just behind several larger programs, while the girls added a ninth-place finish.
At the center of it all was Chase Lorenz, who delivered one of the top performances of the meet. He captured the 200 meter title in 22.20, hitting a state qualifying mark and separating himself in a loaded sprint field.
Lorenz nearly doubled up with another qualifying mark in the 100 meters, finishing second in 11.13, just off the top spot in a race stacked with elite sprinters.
His impact extended beyond individual races. Lorenz anchored the 4×400 relay team to a first-place finish, closing out a performance that showcased both speed and leadership.
Hart’s depth showed throughout the meet. Distance runners consistently placed in competitive fields, and relay teams held their own against larger schools. In a meet designed to test teams, Hart answered with one of its most complete performances of the season.
Then, just days later, Hart carried that momentum into conference competition—and took complete control.
At the WMC Rivers dual, the Pirates dominated across the board:
- Boys: defeated Mason County Central 88 to 49, Hesperia 127 to 10, and Holton 123 to 14
- Girls: defeated Mason County Central 84 to 49, Hesperia 110 to 20, and Holton 104 to 22
Lorenz once again led the way, sweeping the 100, 200, and 400 while contributing to relay victories. But what stood out even more was the team’s depth.
Hart flooded distance events with top finishes, stacked relays, and controlled field events, turning the meet into a statement performance across every discipline.
From competing with elite programs to dominating conference opponents, Hart showed both its ceiling and its consistency in the same week.
