CatchMark SportsNet: Player of the Week of (February 17th – February 21st) – CatchMark Sports

Welcome to the CatchMark SportsNet: Player of the Week, where we celebrate the unsung heroes and rising stars who light up the local sports scene! Each week, we put the spotlight on three extraordinary athletes who not only rack up impressive stats but also inspire their teammates and elevate their game.

At the end of this article, you’ll find a poll where you can cast your vote for the athlete you believe deserves the title of Player of the Week. The poll will be open for one week, starting today and ending on the following Friday (February 14th, 2024). Spread the word, share this article, and rally your friends and family to vote for their favorite athlete! Let’s make some noise and show our local sports stars the appreciation they deserve!

Rilyn Porter, Sophomore, Hart Girls Basketball

Porter, an all-conference athlete last season as a freshman, has maintained that status all season. In her most recent game for Hart, Porter scored 15 first-half points and 18 total. To compliment her scoring, she is also the WMC’s leader in assists per game. The rising sophomore is a big piece in Hart’s season thus far and has helped them to a (17-1, 10-0) record.

Derek Kern, Senior, Mona Shores Bowling

The senior took individual first place last Wednesday at the GMAA bowling tournament. Kern finished with scores of 229 and 222 for a total score of 451. Mona Shores took second place overall and Kern has been a vital part of their success all season. Last Monday in the Sailors dual against Caledonia, Kern rolled a 300, his second of his career.

Addi Hovey, Senior, Hart Girls Basketball

Hovey has cemented herself as a Hart legend in both basketball and track and field. On Friday she picked up the record for points scored all-time in Hart girls’ history. Hovey scored 19 points in the win Friday and now has 1,317 in her career.

Myles Welch joined CatchMark in February 2024 as a CatchMark SportsNet Intern. He would like to become a sports broadcaster or analyst. He currently attends Whitehall High School and will graduate in 2025.

Why are kids from the same team chosen in one week? It seems as though this would be counterintuitive to the team and the community.

Thank you for your question and for engaging with our Player of the Week poll! Our goal is to recognize outstanding individual performances each week, regardless of team affiliation. While we strive for balance across schools and teams throughout the season, some weeks produce multiple standout performances from the same team, making it difficult to choose just one.

Our selections are based on statistics, impact on the game, and overall contributions, ensuring we highlight the athletes who truly earned the recognition. While having two players from the same team in one poll may divide some votes, we believe it also showcases the depth of talent within a program and reinforces the importance of team success.

We always appreciate community input and encourage nominations to help us recognize a wide range of athletes throughout the season. Thanks again for your support, and we look forward to celebrating all of our local student-athletes!
