Welcome to the CatchMark SportsNet: Player of the Week, where we celebrate the unsung heroes and rising stars who light up the local sports scene! Each week, we put the spotlight on three extraordinary athletes who not only rack up impressive stats but also inspire their teammates and elevate their game.

At the end of this article, you’ll find a poll where you can cast your vote for the athlete you believe deserves the title of Player of the Week. The poll will be open for one week, starting today and ending on the following Friday (February 14th, 2024). Spread the word, share this article, and rally your friends and family to vote for their favorite athlete! Let’s make some noise and show our local sports stars the appreciation they deserve!

Redick Powell, Senior, Fremont Boys Basketball

Powell has quietly been one of the WMC’s best scores. The senior put on a clinic last Friday night when he went off for 24 points, five rebounds, and five steals. Powell also scored 17 points this past Wednesday in an upset win against West Michigan Christian. Powell averages 14.5 points per game on the season and will look to finish the regular season out strong for the Packers.

Cole VanderHaag, Junior, Mason County Central Boys Basketball

VanderHaag has been a bucket all season and the junior put that on display this past week. In his last two games, VanderHaag scored 23 and 21 points, respectively. The guard from Scottville is arguably the best scorer in the rivers division right next to North Muskegon’s Adam Dugener. Leading his Spartan squad to a 10-8 record thus far and in second place in their conference.

Liam Leeke, Sophomore, Whitehall Wrestling

Leeke, who is just a sophomore, has dominated the 175-pound weight class all season long. Leeke boasts a 43-7 record on the season and recently punched his ticket to the individual regional tournament. This past Saturday he won all three of his district matches, two of which by pinfall.

Myles Welch joined CatchMark in February 2024 as a CatchMark SportsNet Intern. He would like to become a sports broadcaster or analyst. He currently attends Whitehall High School and will graduate in 2025.
