Welcome to the CatchMark SportsNet: Player of the Week, where we celebrate the unsung heroes and rising stars who light up the local sports scene! Each week, we put the spotlight on three extraordinary athletes who not only rack up impressive stats but also inspire their teammates and elevate their game.

At the end of this article, you’ll find a poll where you can cast your vote for the athlete you believe deserves the title of Player of the Week. The poll will be open for one week, starting today and ending on the following Friday (February 7th, 2024). Spread the word, share this article, and rally your friends and family to vote for their favorite athlete! Let’s make some noise and show our local sports stars the appreciation they deserve!

James Young, Senior, Muskegon Boys Basketball

Young stepped into the starting lineup due to an injury to teammate James Martin. He delivered an impressive 20-point game against state-ranked Ann Arbor Huron, leading the Big Reds to a commanding 66-46 victory on February 1st. His efforts earned him Player of the Game honors in the 2K25 Showcase held at Aquinas College.

Maddux Kipling, Junior, Spring Lake Boys Basketball

Demonstrating his versatility, Kipling achieved a double-double on January 31, against Holland. He recorded 15 points and 10 rebounds, contributing to the Lakers’ 60-50 win. Spring Lake finds themselves at 9-6 overall and Kipling has been a huge contributor to that.

Fletcher Thommen, Junior, Montague Wrestling

Competing in the 150-pound weight class, he achieved a significant milestone by securing his 100th career win on January 28th. In the West Michigan Conference Tournament, Montague’s Boys Varsity Wrestling team secured a third-place finish, which placed them second in the WMC Lakes Division.

Myles Welch joined CatchMark in February 2024 as a CatchMark SportsNet Intern. He would like to become a sports broadcaster or analyst. He currently attends Whitehall High School and will graduate in 2025.
