Shelby football’s Lalo Garcia Player of the Week after piling up rushing, passing, voting numbers

Fan poll erupts after junior QB helps Tigers snap 21-game losing streak.

Last Friday, Lalo Garcia helped Shelby’s football team snap the program’s 21-game losing streak with a 22-16 overtime win at Hesperia.

This week, Garcia was more than recognized for his efforts. His supporters got behind him in a major way.

Garcia ran away with the top spot in the CatchMark SportsNet Player of the Week fan poll, which recognized six athletes from the West Michigan Conference for their performances spanning Sept. 19-24, 2022.

Garcia amassed 15,346 of 25,559 total votes. Oakridge football player Trever Jones was supported extremely well, too, as he finished runner-up with 8,245 votes.

Final voting results can be found at the bottom of this story.

Garcia, a 6-foot-1, 175-pound junior, was a rushing and passing threat for Shelby in the win over Hesperia on Friday, Sept. 23. He ran 22 times for 105 yards and two touchdowns, plus he completed 8 of 9 passes for 102 yards and another TD.

Shelby goes for a second straight win tonight (Friday, Sept. 30), when the Tigers host Holton on homecoming. It would be Shelby’s first two-game winning streak since the middle of the 2014 season.
