Shelby’s Lalo Garcia wins Player of Week honors for second time this school year

Tigers junior baseball standout adds accolade to one he received in the fall during football season.

Back in the fall, Shelby’s Lalo Garcia earned CatchMark SportsNet West Michigan Conference Player of the Week honors for Sept. 19-24 after a big performance that helped the Tigers’ football team snap a 21-game losing streak.

The junior is now looking to lead the Tigers’ baseball team to some success this spring.

Garcia has found some success from a personal standpoint. For the second time this school year, he’s won the Player of the Week fan poll.

In the first Player of the Week poll for the 2023 spring sports season, Garcia finished with the highest voting total. He racked up 1,176 of 2,770 total votes. Montague baseball player Chase Gowell was runner-up in the poll with 689 votes.

Six spring sports athletes from the conference, who stood out in competitions March 27-April 8, 2023, were nominated for Player of the Week.

Garcia got off to a great start to his baseball season in Shelby’s sweep of visiting Brethren on Thursday, April 6. The hard-throwing right-hander fired a five-inning no-hitter in a 10-0 victory in Game 1 of the doubleheader. He struck out 15 and walked two, and he helped his own cause with a pair of hits. In Game 2, Garcia added two more hits in a 20-0 win.
