WMC wrestling roundup: Whitehall breezes through quad; Montague falls to Shelby in 1-point heartbreaker

Whitehall, Montague, Shelby, Hart all find wins on Wednesday evening

WHITEHALL

The Whitehall wrestling team dominated their quad at Montague on Wednesday evening. The Vikings picked up two additional team victories after coming off a 2nd place finish this past weekend at the Allegan Southwest Classic.

The Week 2 state-rankings from Michigan Grappler were released and Whitehall locked in the fifth overall spot. Seven individual Vikings were also on the rankings list including: Aiden Weiler (135, 13th); Max Brown (145, 2nd); Alec Pruett (152, 11th); Nick Blanchard (171, 5th); Brayden VanPatten (189, 15th); Shane Cook (215, 4th); Ira Jenkins (hwt, 1st).

MONTAGUE

The Wildcats split the competition on Wednesday evening at their home quad. Montague defeated Ravenna handedly, and lost in a nail biting battle to Shelby.

Wrestlers who finished 2-0: Jimmy Thommen, Chris Aebig, Landon Askins, Cale Coppess, Tristan Winkleblack, and Joe Winkleman.

Wrestlers who won a match: Savannah Winkleblack, Ethan Hite, Natalie Bassett, Ava Pelton and Andy Hernandez.

Mason County Central

The Spartans picked up their first win against Oakridge, who hasn’t been able to field a team consistently in the past. Coach Kendel Trim was happy to see wrestling expand in the West Michigan Conference. In their second matchup, MCC fell to Hart 58-18. Trim was proud of the quality matches his guys displayed, but focused on the work they still need to put in.

Wrestlers who finished 2-0: Hunter Sanford (Fr 112), Aiden Hirschfeld (So 119),  and Andrew Quinn (Sr Hwt). 

Wrestlers who won a match: Jacob Maidens (Sr 125), Zane McCabe (So 130), Coulter Kirchner (Fr 135), Raiden Keefer (Sr 189), Ethan Horacek (Fr 215), and Gradyn Wilson (Fr Hwt). 

RAVENNA

The Bulldogs have struggled so far this season, but continue to improve at each event. They to had to battle against Montague and state-ranked Whitehall.

SHELBY

In Montague, The Tigers took a beating from the Vikings in their first duel against the state-ranked powerhouse. However, in the second matchup, they were able so stay afloat to defeat Montague by one point.
