Three standout performances rose above the rest across baseball and track during a championship-filled week of high school sports. Spring Lake’s Macy Subka helped lead the Lakers to a Division 2 girls track and field state championship with a dominant showing that included three state titles. Ludington distance star Eliza Schwass cemented her place among Michigan’s elite runners by winning two state championships and adding a runner-up finish at the Division 2 state finals. On the baseball diamond, Shelby’s DayDay Garcia delivered in the biggest moments of the postseason, powering the Tigers to a district championship with outstanding performances both on the mound and at the plate. These three athletes are this week’s nominees for Player of the Week.
Macy Subka – Spring Lake Track and Field
Subka turned in one of the most impressive performances of the state finals weekend, helping Spring Lake capture the Division 2 girls track and field state championship. She claimed individual state titles in both the 100-meter hurdles and 300-meter hurdles, then capped the day by running a key leg on the Lakers’ state championship 4×400-meter relay team. Her efforts were instrumental in Spring Lake bringing home the team state title, making her one of the most accomplished athletes in the state this week.
Eliza Schwass – Ludington Track and Field
Schwass delivered a remarkable distance-running performance at the Division 2 state finals, winning state championships in both the 800-meter run and 1,600-meter run while also finishing runner-up in the 3,200-meter run. Her three all-state performances helped Ludington finish third in the team standings and showcased her versatility and endurance against the state’s top competition. Few athletes across Michigan scored more points or had a bigger impact on their team’s success during the state meet.
DayDay Garcia – Shelby Baseball
Garcia was the catalyst behind Shelby’s successful postseason run, shining both as a pitcher and hitter during a pivotal week for the Tigers. He earned MVP honors in a win over Muskegon Catholic Central after allowing just three hits over four innings while adding a single, triple, and three runs scored at the plate. He followed that performance by tossing a complete-game victory in Shelby’s 2-1 district championship win over Montague, helping the Tigers secure a district title and advance in the state tournament.
