Ahria Doornbos provides lift for Oakridge softball, rises to top in Player of Week poll

Junior makes it two Eagles in three weeks to earn distinction.

Oakridge’s softball team generally had little trouble scoring runs this season. After all, the Eagles set a school record for home runs in a season with 50.

When she wasn’t setting the table for the heavy-hitting offense, Ahria Doornbos played a big part in producing those runs.

This week, she was a big vote-receiver. Doornbos won the CatchMark SportsNet West Michigan Conference Player of the Week fan poll. With 1,167 votes, she finished at the top of the poll, which recognized six WMC spring sports athletes for their performances spanning June 5-10, 2023.

North Muskegon soccer player Kennedi Koekkoek finished runner-up in the poll with 861 votes.

Last Saturday was a tough day for the Oakridge softball team, which saw a 4-1 seventh-inning lead vanish in a 5-4 loss to Coopersville in the Division 2 regional semifinals at Spring Lake. Doornbos had a big day at the plate, however. From the No. 5 spot in Eagles’ tough-hitting lineup, she finished 3-for-4 with three RBIs.

Two weeks ago, Oakridge’s Andrea Romero-Serrano won the Player of the Week fan poll.
