BOYS SOCCER
Fremont captures outright WMC championship
Fremont’s boys soccer team completed a nearly-worst-to-first rebound from the 2022 season to 2023, as the Packers captured the outright West Michigan Conference title with a 4-0 win at Manistee last Wednesday.
Montague’s 2-1 victory over North Muskegon prevented the Norsemen from sharing the WMC championship with the Packers.
Arturo Romero-Serrano on cusp of netting 100th career goal
With nine goals in two matches last week, Oakridge senior Arturo Romero-Serrano is on the verge of reaching the 100-goal plateau for his career.
He’ll have a chance of reaching the milestone in a Division 3 district opener against Grant at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Russell A. Erickson Stadium.
VOLLEYBALL
Fremont enjoys big week with another one ahead
Fremont swept host Whitehall last Tuesday in a WMC Lakes Division match, 25-18, 25-14, 25-20, for a key victory.
Fremont followed that up by winning the 12th annual Lori Vargas Volley Against Violence tournament Saturday at Hesperia. The Packers defeated White Cloud in the finals in a tough match, 25-27, 25-17, 15-12. Fremont totaled 120 digs, 100 kills, and 71 service aces on the day.
This Tuesday, Fremont hosts Ludington in a battle of teams that are still unbeaten in the WMC Lakes Division.

Oakridge wins Kent City Dig Pink Invitational
Oakridge’s volleyball team captured the championship in the Kent City Dig Pink Invitational on Saturday.
The Eagles went 2-1 in pool play, falling to Grandville Calvin Christian, before they avenged that defeat in the tournament finals by a score of 25-11, 25-20.
FOOTBALL
North Muskegon banks on defense in rainy win at Ravenna
In rainy conditions that made passing nearly impossible, North Muskegon relied on its stingy defense to defeat host Ravenna, 18-7, and stay unbeaten on the season at 7-0.
The Norsemen, ranked No. 4 in Division 7, improved to 4-0 in the WMC Rivers.
Division 4 top-ranked Whitehall defeated host Ludington on Friday, 48-0, to remain unbeaten on the season. The Vikings have outscored WMC Lakes Division opponents by a combined 166-7 margin. Overall, they’ve outscored all opponents to the tune of 311-63.
The Portage Invitational is one of the most well-attended high school cross country meets around.
The West Michigan Conference was well-represented in Saturday’s meet, which featured hundreds of runners.
Hart junior Jessica Jazwinski took first in the girls Division 3 race with a time of 17:30.9. She was the second-fastest runner in the entire invite behind Ann Arbor Pioneer’s Rachel Forsyth (16:49.2).
Jazwinski’s freshman brother, Bobby, took second in the boys Division 3 race with a time of 15:51.4. He finished behind Pewamo-Westphalia senior Collin Farmer (15:40.3).
