The CatchMark Catch-Up is a weekly recap of highlights from the West Michigan Conference.

It’s Monday, Jan. 22, 2024, and we’re hitting highlights from last week in 2023-24 WMC winter sports.

WRESTLING

Whitehall wins GMAA title for 17th time in 18 years

Whitehall’s wrestling team had seven individual champions en route to capturing the Greater Muskegon Athletic Association tournament title for the 17th time in 18 years Saturday at Muskegon High School’s Redmond Potter Gymnasium.

Whitehall finished with top-four medalists in 13 of 14 weight classes. Meanwhile, Montague had a solid day with five medalists.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Whitehall, North Muskegon remain unbeaten

Whitehall continued to cruise, while North Muskegon got pushed in Friday night boys basketball action. By the end of the night, the Vikings and Norsemen both remained unbeaten.

Whitehall rolled past visiting Orchard View in WMC Lakes Division action, 74-23.

In a game of runs, North Muskegon escaped Ravenna with a 60-51 win in WMC Rivers Division play.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Fremont continues to play well with help of Jessica Bennett

Fremont’s girls basketball team has won five straight games and carries momentum into Tuesday night’s WMC Lakes Division first-place battle at Ludington. The Packers are 8-2 overall and 4-0 in the WMC Lakes, while the Orioles are 6-5 and 4-0, respectively.

Last Wednesday, CatchMark SportsNet published an “Ice Breaker” episode on Fremont senior Jessica Bennett, who is a leader for the Packers.
