GIRLS BASKETBALL
Clare Westerlund’s breakout game powers Whitehall past Montague
Freshman Clare Westerlund scored a game- and career-high 16 points to go with 11 rebounds, three steals, and two blocks in powering Whitehall to a 37-35 road victory over Montague Friday. The Vikings’ victory avenged a 20-point loss to the Wildcats early in the season.
Fremont rallies past Ludington in WMC Lakes first-place battle
Fremont senior Jessica Bennett made three big 3-point baskets in the final 3 1/2 minutes and junior Mia Clemence scored eight of her game-high 16 points down the stretch to power their team to a 41-35 win over host Ludington in a WMC Lakes first-place battle last Tuesday.
It was Fremont’s first victory over Ludington since 2007.
Whitehall’s boys basketball team remained perfect on the season with a 58-56 victory at Cadillac last Tuesday in a nonleague battle of unbeatens.
Last Thursday, Whitehall put on a dunking show in a 66-47 nonleague win at Newaygo.
Whitehall takes a 14-0 overall record into a big week, traveling to much-improved Mona Shores Tuesday and hosting perennially strong Grand Rapids Covenant Christian on Friday.
