Prolific Oakridge goal-scorer wins Player of Week accolades (Aug. 29-Sept. 2, 2022)

After finishing runner-up in poll last week, Arturo Romero claims top spot.

Arturo Romero is on a goal-scoring tear unlike anything seen around these parts for quite some time, if ever.

The junior striker has led Oakridge’s soccer team to its current seven-game winning streak. This week, he also tallied more votes than anybody else in the CatchMark SportsNet Player of the Week fan poll.

After finishing runner-up in the poll last week, Romero claimed the top spot this week. He racked up 1,725 of 3,489 total votes to hold off Whitehall volleyball’s Sidney Shepherd, who finished with 1,388 votes.

The poll was based upon performances spanning Aug. 29-Sept. 2, 2022. See complete poll results at the bottom of this story.

Romero has been on a torrid pace for the Eagles. He broke Oakridge’s single-season goal-scoring record, previously held by Travis Lucas with 26, by putting in six goals in the Eagles’ 6-1 victory at Fremont on Wednesday (Aug. 31). At the time, that gave Romero 28 goals on the season in only nine games.

After four more goals this Wednesday in a 4-1 win over Ravenna, the 5-foot-9, 140-pound Romero is up to 32 goals. He has seven straight games scoring a hat trick or more, which moves him into the No. 2 spot in the Michigan High School Athletic Association record books.

As a team, Oakridge is 8-1-1 overall and 3-0-0 in West Michigan Conference play.
