Player of the Week

Whitehall wrestling’s Darnell Mack wins CatchMark SportsNet Player of Week (Jan. 15-20, 2024)

Vikings senior is unbeaten on the mat this season. He also won Player of the Week honors in football in the fall.

Nobody has been able to defeat Whitehall wrestler Darnell Mack this season, at least not to this point.

The Vikings senior added another win to his resume today: He’s the CatchMark SportsNet West Michigan Conference Player of the Week.

Mack finished atop another lively CatchMark SportsNet fan poll. He racked up 4,250 of 10,202 total votes in the poll, which recognized six winter sports athletes for their performances Jan. 15-20, 2024. He held off Montague junior wrestler Ava Pelton, who finished runner-up with 3,036 votes, as well as Hart senior basketball player Abby Hicks, who totaled 2,568 votes.

In last Saturday’s Greater Muskegon Athletic Association tournament at Muskegon High School’s Redmond Potter Gymnasium, Mack recorded three pinfalls en route to capturing the title of the 150-pound weight class. His victory over Orchard View’s Xander Randall in the semifinals was the 100th of Mack’s career. As a team, Whitehall rolled to its 17th GMAA championship in 18 years.

Last Wednesday, Mack pinned both WMC opponents in dual action, which was highlighted by Division 3 No. 3 Whitehall’s 53-18 win over Division 3 No. 4 Hart.

After two more wins in WMC dual action this Wednesday, Mack is 31-0 on the season. As a team, Whitehall is ranked No. 2 in Division 3. The Vikings host the Rick Champion Duals on Saturday when they’ll face the likes of Newaygo, Belding, Hudsonville, and Rockford.

Mack, who was a tough running back for Whitehall’s football team, earned CatchMark SportsNet WMC Player of the Week honors in the fall (Oct. 23-28, 2023).
